Liquor Shops in Karnataka to Shut Down from May 29 – Protest by Liquor Retailers!

Why is the Bandh (Shutdown) Being Called?

The Karnataka government has proposed a significant hike in excise license renewal fees. According to the proposal, license fees for liquor shops in both urban and rural areas are set to be doubled. In addition, liquor prices have been tripled, severely impacting sales.

Retailers’ Outrage

According to Karunakar Hegde, Vice President of the Karnataka Liquor Retailers’ Association:
“The new government policies are destroying our system. With increased license fees and a steep rise in liquor prices, doing business has become unfeasible. That’s why we have declared a complete shutdown from May 29.”

Government’s Response

To address the issue, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has agreed to hold a meeting with the Liquor Retailers’ Association on May 29. However, if the meeting doesn’t yield a satisfactory outcome, all liquor outlets across the state are prepared to remain closed indefinitely from that date.

New Excise Year Rules

A new excise year is set to begin in Karnataka from July. With this, over 13,000 liquor shops in the state will need to renew their licenses. During this period, the government has issued a draft notification proposing a significant hike in license renewal fees.

Impact on the Public

If the shutdown proceeds, there could be a statewide shortage of liquor. This will severely impact pubs, restaurants, and liquor shops.

Waiting for the Final Decision

The outcome of the meeting between the government and retailers on May 26 will play a crucial role in determining whether the bandh will proceed. If the government does not roll back the proposed fee hikes, liquor stores may remain closed for an extended period.

These developments could lead to major changes in Karnataka’s liquor policy. Stay tuned for more updates!
